Identify: functionalists see society as based on consensus (shared values that benefit everyone). Marxists see it as based on conflict between classes, organised to benefit the ruling class.
Explain: take education. Functionalists such as Parsons see school as a meritocracy that teaches shared values and sorts people into jobs by talent. Marxists such as Bowles and Gintis argue that its hidden curriculum trains working-class pupils to be obedient workers, reproducing class inequality.

Shine society through the prism and it splits into three lenses: Functionalism, Marxism and Feminism. Send every idea down the right beam, build the hall of thinkers and charge all three lenses to see the whole picture.
