For exams in 2027 to 2029 you take Paper 1 and Paper 2 (1 hour 45 minutes each), plus Paper 4, the written alternative to coursework.

Lots of students learn geography this way. Some are home educated, some go to international schools around the world that don’t offer the subject, and some just want an extra GCSE-level qualification alongside school.

It works well, as long as you know how the examination, fieldwork and exam entry fit together, and that’s exactly what this guide explains using only the exam boards’ own documents.

At a glance

Board: Cambridge International (Cambridge IGCSE Geography 0460)

New syllabus: exams in 2027, 2028 and 2029, in the June and November series

Paper 1 Physical Geography: 1 hour 45 minutes, 75 marks, 36%

Paper 2 Human Geography: 1 hour 45 minutes, 75 marks, 36%

Paper 4 Geographical Investigations: 1 hour 30 minutes, 60 marks, 28% (or school coursework)

No tiers: grades A* to G for everyone

About 130 guided learning hours

How does studying IGCSE Geography online work?

An online course swaps the classroom for short lessons you open on a laptop, tablet or phone, whenever suits you. You work through the course material at your own pace, test yourself as you go, and then sit exactly the same papers as students in school.

The qualification is the same too.

What should the course material cover?

Good online learning follows the specification in order, topic by topic. Each lesson teaches one small part, with maps, photos, graphs and key words, so you never have to guess what might come up. Short lessons also make it easier to keep going in busy weeks.

How do you get practice and feedback?

Reading on its own isn’t enough. You need quick quizzes after each lesson, exam-style questions, mock papers near the end, and a way to track your progress so weak topics get a second look. Some providers sell tutor support, marking or a personal tutor for an extra fee, so check what the course includes before you enrol.

Where do you sit the exams?

No online course can award the qualification. You sit the written papers in person at a school or exam centre that accepts private candidates (students who aren’t enrolled there), which we explain further down.

Online study isn’t just screen time. Cambridge International sets IGCSE Geography 0460, and Pearson Edexcel sets International GCSE Geography 4GE1. It has just two papers and no coursework to arrange. Edexcel still asks you to complete fieldwork, though, because Section B of each paper has questions on your own enquiry.

Which one should you choose?

Usually, the one your exam centre offers. Both are respected, and Cambridge says UK ENIC found Cambridge IGCSE comparable to a UK GCSE. Our course teaches Cambridge 0460, so the rest of this guide focuses on that. You can check the details on the Cambridge IGCSE Geography 0460 page or Pearson’s Edexcel International GCSE Geography page.

Weighing up other subjects too? Our guide to online IGCSE courses for home learners and international students looks at studying IGCSEs online more widely.

What you study in IGCSE Geography

Cambridge rewrote the course for first exams in 2027. Physical geography is all on Paper 1. Human geography is all on Paper 2. Cambridge gives “skills and analysis” 48% of the marks across the whole qualification, so you’ll practise grid references, contour lines, 20 types of graph, photos, satellite images and simple statistics until they feel easy. In Section B you pick two questions out of three, each also worth 25. Every question starts with short answers about a map, photo or graph, then builds up to a longer answer where you explain or evaluate, which is where the top grades are won.

Coursework or Paper 4?

Coursework is one fieldwork report of 1,800 to 2,200 words, set and marked by a teacher at your school. The syllabus says private candidates can enter 0460, but some components aren’t open to them.

So if you’re learning online, plan on the written paper and confirm it with your exam centre early. It has two compulsory questions worth 30 marks each, on the “route to geographical enquiry”: writing a hypothesis, choosing methods like questionnaires and counts, presenting data and drawing conclusions. Our lesson on the route to geographical enquiry walks you through each step.

The syllabus says you need a pencil, eraser, ruler, protractor and calculator in every Geography exam.

What are detailed specific examples?

They’re what older books call case studies. A detailed specific example is a real place or event you learn in depth and use as evidence, ideally from the year 2000 onwards, and almost every topic needs one. Our river flood example is the York floods of December 2015.

Fieldwork when you learn geography online

Fieldwork means collecting your own data outside. It’s the part parents worry about most. Yet it’s very doable from home, with a parent and some simple kit.

A shallow stream, a metre ruler, a float and a stopwatch are enough for a real river investigation.

Practical fieldwork you can do near home

Paper 4 asks about methods rather than a project of your own. Even so, trying a few makes the questions far easier, because you’ll know what really goes wrong.

Measure the width, depth and speed of a shallow stream at three points.

Count pedestrians at different spots in your town centre at the same time of day (see our lesson on traffic and pedestrian counts).

Score urban streets with an environmental quality survey, from 1 to 5 for litter, noise and so on.

Run a short questionnaire with family and neighbours.

How do you stay safe?

Always write a risk assessment first. Only go into water that’s shallow and slow, always with an adult, and keep away from busy roads. Risk assessment and safety is on the syllabus too, so you’re revising while you plan.

Free 3D game

River Run

Fly a survey drone from source to mouth and build the Bradshaw model: width, depth, velocity, discharge, gradient and load. It sounds formal, but in practice it comes down to four steps:

Find a school, college, British Council office or private exam centre that takes Cambridge private candidates.

Ask whether it offers Geography 0460 and Paper 4, by name, as not every centre runs every subject.

Check its closing date and entry fee. Centres set their own, often months before the exams, so contact one at least six months ahead.

Make your entry, then keep the timetable and any instructions the centre sends.

On exam day you’ll sit the papers with other students under normal examination rules, with the equipment the syllabus lists. Bring a spare pencil too. Our guide to GCSEs for home educated students covers the private candidate process in more detail.

Is IGCSE Geography hard?

It’s very manageable. Cambridge says you don’t need to have studied geography before, and there are no tiers, so every student sits the same papers. The real challenge is breadth: ten topics, lots of examples and plenty of skills.

Here are Cambridge’s own results for everyone in the world who sat IGCSE Geography in June 2025.

Cambridge IGCSE Geography results, June 2025

Percentage of students worldwide at each grade or above

A*6.2%

A or above23.2%

B or above48.4%

C or above71.9%

D or above84.1%

E or above91.6%

F or above95.8%

G or above98.2%

Source: Cambridge IGCSE June 2025 results statistics (published 2025). 1.8% were ungraded.

So about 7 in 10 students get a C or better. Only about 1 in 16 gets an A*. A steady plan with lots of self-testing is what moves you up the grades.

Who does it suit?

You’ll enjoy it if you like maps, the news, nature or asking why places look the way they do. It also suits independent learners, because each topic is self-contained and easy to plan around. And if you like both data and writing, you’ll get plenty of each.

What does it lead to?

Cambridge says students with A* to C are well prepared for AS and A Level Geography. It sits nicely next to sciences and humanities for A-levels, and the data skills help in almost any subject.

How to prepare: a two-year online study plan

Cambridge designs the course for about 130 guided learning hours. Over two school years, that’s roughly an hour and a half to two hours of study a week. A one-year plan roughly doubles it.

When

Focus

Year 1, autumn

Rivers, then coasts.
