Sociology is the study of society and its social structures: families, schools, crime and why some groups get more chances than others.

This guide explains how an online GCSE Sociology course works: what you study, how the exams work, how to book your exam, what to check before you choose a course, what’s free and a month-by-month study plan.

At a glance

Board and code: AQA GCSE Sociology, 8192

Exams: once a year, in May. The GCSE is exactly the same whether you learn it in a classroom or on a laptop at home. You sit the same papers, on the same day, as every other student taking AQA GCSE Sociology, and you get the same grade and the same certificate.

It’s the same full GCSE qualification either way. That’s because there’s no coursework (work that’s marked during the course) and no other non-exam assessment. Your whole grade comes from the two exams at the end, so where you learn the content doesn’t matter. The only part you can’t do online is the exam itself.

Who takes sociology this way?

Home-educated students who want a GCSE that fits a home timetable.

Students whose school doesn’t offer it and want sociology as an extra subject, often because they’re thinking about A level Sociology.

Students at school who want extra support to catch up on a topic, go over lessons again or revise before the exams.

If you’re still at school, talk to your exams officer first. Some schools will enter you for an extra GCSE even if they don’t teach it, which saves you a lot of work.

What you study on an online GCSE Sociology course

Any good course follows the exam board’s specification, the official list of everything you can be tested on. For AQA 8192 there are four main topics, two on each paper, plus the sociological approach and sociological research methods, which run through both. You can read the full list on the AQA GCSE Sociology specification page.

Paper

Topic

What it’s about

Both papers

The sociological approach

Key ideas like socialisation, norms and values, and the main perspectives: functionalism, Marxism, feminism and interactionism

Paper 1

Families

What families do, different family types, how couples share housework and money, and how family life has changed

Paper 1

Education

What schools are for, why results differ by class, gender and ethnicity, and labelling and streaming

Paper 2

Crime and deviance

Why people break laws and social rules, social control, and how crime is measured

Paper 2

Social stratification

Social class, life chances, poverty, power and inequality

Both papers

Research methods

Questionnaires, interviews, observation and statistics, and how to judge them

Most courses start with the sociological approach. There’s no autumn sitting for GCSE Sociology, so May is your only chance each year. Results come out in August. Always confirm the dates with the centre where you sit your exams.

Question types

Each paper has two sections, one per topic. In AQA’s June 2022 papers, every section had two multiple choice questions, short answer questions such as “describe” and “identify and explain”, worth 2 to 4 marks, and two extended answers worth 12 marks each. That means essays make up almost half the marks.

So knowledge alone isn’t enough.

AQA’s assessment rewards three skills: knowing the content (40%), applying it (40%), and analysing and evaluating it (20%). You need to practise writing answers that explain an idea, give evidence on both sides and reach a judgement.

A real 12-mark question

Here’s one from AQA’s June 2022 Paper 1: “Discuss how far sociologists would agree that the nuclear family is still considered the norm in Britain today. [12 marks]” A strong answer explains what a nuclear family is, uses evidence on both sides and ends with a clear judgement. Questions like this are exactly where a course with exam practice earns its keep.

Set a timer and write 12-mark answers at home. In the exam you’ve got about a mark a minute, so roughly 12 to 15 minutes for each one.

See how an online sociology lesson works. The first three lessons are free, with no card needed.

Try 3 lessons free →

Booking your exam as a private candidate

If your own school doesn’t enter you, you take the exam as a private candidate. That just means you enter through an exam centre that isn’t your school. Course fees don’t usually include the exam, so this step is up to you.

Finding a centre

AQA doesn’t enter students itself. Its guidance says: “It’s up to the school or college whether to accept private candidates. We can’t ask a school or college to accept your entry.”

The best place to start is the JCQ private candidates search. JCQ (the Joint Council for Qualifications) lists 190 centres that have confirmed they’ll accept private candidates this year, and it updates the list each December or January. You can search by postcode. A school or college that isn’t on the list may still say yes, so it’s worth asking local ones too.

Even if you learn online, you sit both papers in person, often in a hall like this at a school or college.

Fees and deadlines

Each centre sets its own fee and its own deadline, which may be earlier than AQA’s. Enter late and you’ll pay late fees on top. Many centres fill their places early, so start looking in the autumn before your exams. The exam fee is separate from your course fees, so ask for a full price before you book your exam.

If you need extra time or other access arrangements, talk to the centre as early as you can. AQA explains the whole process in its guide to finding a school or college as a private candidate.

A note for home-educating families

In England, the Department for Education’s guidance for parents says that families who home educate take on the full cost of their child’s education, including any public exams. So plan for exam fees from the start.

How to choose a sociology course

There are lots of online GCSE courses, and they’re built very differently. Some send you long reading packs and assignments, with a tutor to mark them. Others give you short lessons with plenty of practice. Here’s what to check before you enrol, so you complete the course and don’t just start it.

It follows the right specification

Check the exam board and code. Most UK courses teach AQA 8192, but a few teach Cambridge IGCSE Sociology, which has different topics and papers. Your course, your revision and your exam entry must all match.

Short lessons you can finish in one go

Online learning works best in small chunks. A 30-minute lesson is easy to fit around school, hobbies or home education. A three-hour unit is easy to put off. Clear explanations with pictures support you too, because there’s no teacher to ask when something doesn’t make sense.

Lots of testing, with feedback

Reading a page once won’t make it stick. You remember far more by pulling ideas back out of your head. Look for a quiz after every lesson, flash cards and feedback that shows you the right answer when you get one wrong.

A plan and a way to see your progress

Without a teacher setting homework, it’s easy to drift, even for a keen learner. A timetable that spreads the lessons across the months before your exam, plus a page showing what you’ve done, keeps you on track. It also lets a parent check in.

Tutor support or self-study?

Some courses include a tutor who marks a set of assignments and gives each learner support by email. These usually cost more, and you may have to finish each assignment before you move on.

A self-study course is more flexible and usually cheaper, and you can enrol at any time of year. You work through the lessons and quizzes at your own pace and check longer answers against AQA’s mark schemes. Some students mix the two: a self-study course for the content, plus a few tutor sessions on 12-mark answers.

Clear costs

Check what’s included in the enrolment and how many months of access you get.

See whether there’s a monthly payment plan or one payment.

Ask whether exam fees are included. They usually aren’t, because you pay the centre directly.

I know which exam board and code I’m sitting (AQA 8192 for most students)

I’ve checked the course follows that exact specification

I’ve tried a free lesson to see if the teaching suits me

I know the course has quizzes and feedback on every topic

I know how long I’ll have access and how I’ll pay

I’ve found an exam centre that takes private candidates

I know the centre’s fee and its entry deadline

I have a study plan that finishes before May

Can you study sociology for free?

You can learn a lot for free, but the qualification itself always costs something, because centres charge a fee for the exam. There are no formulas, and the subject links to everyday life, like why some pupils do better at school or why some crimes never get reported. That makes ideas easier to remember. The lesson on defining crime and deviance is a good example: wearing a suit on the beach breaks a social rule, but not the law.

Grade 4 or above in AQA GCSEs, June 2026

The share of students who got a grade 4 (a standard pass) or higher, Sociology compared with other essay subjects

Religious Studies A74.1%

All AQA GCSEs71.8%

Sociology67.4%

History66.2%

Citizenship65.4%

Geography65.1%

Psychology63.0%

Source: AQA results statistics, June 2026 GCSE (provisional, published 20 August 2026)

In June 2026, 23,593 students sat AQA GCSE Sociology and 67.4% got a grade 4 or higher. That’s close to history and geography, and a little below the 71.8% for all AQA GCSEs, so it’s a fair challenge, not an easy ride.

The tricky part is writing, especially the analytical side of weighing up evidence. You need key terms, named sociologists and lots of practice at 12-mark answers. Little and often works far better than cramming.

It suits you if you’re curious about people and society, can work steadily without a teacher reminding you and enjoy arguing a point. You’ll study sociology through real social issues, from poverty to school results. It builds critical thinking and essay skills that help in other subjects too. A GCSE in sociology leads naturally to A level Sociology, and it sits well beside A level subjects like psychology, history and law. Later on, it’s useful for a career in teaching, social work or the police.

Studying sociology GCSE with Brainy Lemons

Our AQA GCSE Sociology online course is built for school-age students who want to study sociology at home or alongside school. With no coursework, it’s one of the easiest GCSEs to take this way.

</details>
<details class="bl-faq">

How long does an online GCSE Sociology course take?

Most students take one or two school years. Our course is about 130 hours, so it fits into one school year at about 6 hours a week, or two years at about 2 hours a week.

</details>
<details class="bl-faq">

Is the exam included in the course fees?

Usually not. You book the exam yourself with a school or college that accepts private candidates and pay its fee. If you’re at school, ask your exams officer whether the school can enter you.

</details>
<details class="bl-faq">

Do I need a tutor for GCSE Sociology?

No, plenty of students do well with a self-study course, quizzes and AQA’s past papers. A tutor can help if you’re stuck on 12-mark answers, but it isn’t required.

</details>
<details class="bl-faq">

Are there any entry requirements?

No. You don’t need to have studied sociology before. Good reading and writing help, because nearly half the marks come from extended answers.

</details>
<details class="bl-faq">

Can I try a GCSE Sociology course online for free?

Yes. The first three lessons of our AQA GCSE Sociology course are free with no card needed, and the Social Lens and Perspective Prism games are free to play.

</details>

AQA GCSE Sociology (8192)

Study AQA GCSE Sociology at home, at your own pace

Short lessons that follow the AQA specification, with a quiz, games and flash cards for every one, and a timetable that gets you to exam day.

260 short lessons that follow the AQA 8192 specification

A quiz, a quiz show and a zombie defence game on every lesson

4,618 flash cards, from easy to exam-hard

2 3D Sociology games for the hardest topics

Try 3 lessons free →See the full course

No card needed.
