6️⃣ Eventual Fate

Over time, the oxbow lake may fill with sediment and vegetation, eventually becoming a marshy area and then dry land, sometimes called an 'oxbow scar'.

Hydraulic action: The force of water against the bank removes material.

  • Eventually, complete plugs of sediment isolate the oxbow lake

The US Army Corps of Engineers has actively managed the Mississippi since the 1930s, artificially cutting off meanders to improve navigation and flood control. This has created numerous "engineered" oxbow lakes and shortened the river by over 240 km in total.
