“I love Brainy Lemons so much I’ve been recommending it to others. What I found, as a parent, the most useful was the timetable feature. I could put when I wanted the course to finish into the timetable and loved how it worked out a weekly set of lessons. This gave us plenty of time for revision and exam practise and my child went into the exam feeling confident.”

“My son is home educated and we signed him up to the Geography and Business courses. We got a discount when signing up for 2 courses and so it worked out really good value for money. My son has found it easy to use just following through the lessons and it really helped to be able to set a deadline to keep my son on track. I would really like to see more subjects and more options to pay where you can spread the cost as being home educated and having to pay for all education yourself can really add up.”

Online GCSE courses: how studying GCSEs at home really works

Online GCSE courses let you learn every topic at home, on your own timetable, and then sit the same exams as everyone else. The learning is online. The exams aren't: you sit them in person at a centre.

That split is the bit most families don't realise at the start. So below we explain the whole process, from picking a qualification and board to booking your exam, what it all costs and how long it takes.

At a glance

  • Can you do GCSEs online? Yes, you can study online. The exams are sat on paper at a centre near you.
  • Who books the exam? You do, as a private candidate. Exam fees are paid to the centre, not to the course provider.
  • Entry deadline: usually around 21 February for the summer exams, and centres often want it earlier.
  • Time needed: about 130 guided learning hours for each GCSE.
  • Same qualification: your certificate shows your grade, not how or where you studied.

Can you do GCSEs online?

Yes. You can study GCSEs from home as distance learning, work through the whole spec and practise for the exams. What you can't do is sit the GCSE exam online. GCSE and IGCSE exams are written papers taken at a school, college or private centre, under the same rules as everyone else.

So when you see "online GCSE" or "GCSE online exam", it means the learning and practice are online. The qualification you end up with is exactly the same as a school pupil's. Sixth forms, colleges, universities and employers look at the grade, not where you learned.

Who studies GCSEs this way?

Many online GCSE learners are 14 to 16 and in home education. Others are in school but want a GCSE their school doesn't offer, or want to go over a topic again in a different way. Some are international students who want a UK qualification and sit their exams abroad.

Online learning suits a learner who can work steadily on their own. It doesn't need a parent who knows the topic, but it does help to have someone checking in each week.

GCSE or IGCSE: which is easier to do at home?

Both are Level 1/2 qualifications, and both are accepted by sixth forms and colleges. The big difference for home education is what has to happen outside the exam hall.

GCSE (AQA, OCR, Edexcel, WJEC)IGCSE (Pearson Edexcel, Cambridge)
Who takes itMainly pupils in UK schoolsInternational schools, independent schools and many home educated teenagers
Practicals and courseworkGCSE sciences have required practicals your centre must confirm. Some, like art, are mostly coursework. Most can be taken with written exams only
When you can sit itSummer (May and June). November is only for English Language and maths, for students aged 16 or over.Summer, and a November series for many IGCSEs
Grades9 to 1Pearson Edexcel: 9 to 1. Cambridge: 9 to 1 or A* to G, depending on the syllabus code.
Accepted by sixth forms and collegesYesYes, but check with the sixth form you're aiming for

That's why so many home educating families choose IGCSEs for science. If you want an AQA GCSE science, check first that a centre near you will run the required practicals for private candidates. The note in our course list above explains this in more detail.

Tiers: Foundation and Higher

Some GCSEs come in two tiers. For GCSE Maths Foundation tier the grades are 1 to 5, and for GCSE Maths Higher tier they're 4 to 9. AQA GCSE Biology and Chemistry are tiered the same way. You choose the tier when the exam entry is made, so you don't need to decide on day one. If maths is a worry, the Foundation paper still reaches a grade 5. Choose Higher if you're aiming for a 6 or above, as sixth forms often ask for a grade 6 or higher in subjects you want to take at A level.

How to sit GCSE exams as a private candidate

If you study an online GCSE course at home, you'll sit the exam as a "private candidate". It sounds formal, but the process is straightforward once you know the steps.

Step 1: Pick the exact spec

Each board gives every qualification its own code, such as Pearson Edexcel IGCSE Biology 4BI1 or Cambridge IGCSE Geography 0460. Your learning and your exam entry must match. Every Brainy Lemons course shows its board and exam years.

Step 2: Find a centre early

Centres don't have to take private candidates, and places can be limited. Look for schools, colleges and private exam centres that accept them. Pearson and Cambridge both have centre search tools, and your local council's home education team often keeps a list. Get in touch in the autumn before the summer you want to sit.

Step 3: Get the entry in before the deadline

The standard entry deadline for the summer series is usually 21 February. Many centres set their own deadline a few weeks earlier, and late entries cost much more. For a November IGCSE sitting, centres usually want your entry by the end of the summer.

Step 4: Ask about access arrangements

If your child needs extra time, a reader or rest breaks, the centre has to apply for it and may need its own assessment. Raise this when you get in touch, as it can take months.

Step 5: Sit the exams and get your results

Summer GCSE and IGCSE results come out in August. The certificate comes later, through the centre, and it's the same certificate a school pupil gets.

Every course follows one exam board spec, so you know exactly which exam to book.

What does studying GCSEs online cost?

There are two separate costs: the learning, and the exam itself. Here are realistic ranges for 2026, for each GCSE.

OptionTypical costWhat you get
Private tutorAround £35-£45 an hour for GCSE (UK tutoring marketplaces, 2026)One-to-one help. An hour a week soon adds up to over £1,000 a year.
Online school with live classesOften thousands of pounds a yearTimetabled live classes and teacher marking
Self-study online GCSE courseBrainy Lemons: £120 a course before any discount, or £10 a monthA structured set of lessons, quizzes and practice you work through whenever suits you
Exam entry as a private candidateCommonly £180-£300 each; for example, one centre lists £250 and another £290 for 2026Entry, invigilation and admin at the centre. Late entries cost more.

Exam fees are never included in any online course price, ours included. Budget for them from the start.

Are there free or government funded GCSE courses?

In England, some further education colleges take home educated 14 to 16 year olds onto part-time courses that the government funds. Places depend on the college and what it runs. It's worth asking your local college. Free revision sites are useful too, but they rarely teach a whole spec in order.

How long does an online GCSE course take?

Boards plan each GCSE around 130 guided learning hours. Most learners spread that over one or two school years. Here's what a steady week can look like in home education with three qualifications over a year.

Sample week: 3 qualifications, exams next summer

  • Monday to Thursday: two 30-minute lessons a day, each followed by its quiz.
  • Friday: flash cards and a game on the week's topics, then catch up on anything missed.
  • Every few weeks: go back over a whole topic before moving on.
  • Last two months: no new topics, just revision and past paper practice from the board's website.

Starting in September for exams the following summer is common. Starting in January still works if you can do a bit more each week. Our timetable does the maths for you: pick your finish date and it plans every week.

How to choose the best online GCSE course

Lots of providers sell online courses for GCSE. Before you enrol, check these things.

How Brainy Lemons works for GCSE and IGCSE study at home

Each course follows one board's spec, step by step. Lessons take about 30 minutes, with explanations, diagrams, pictures and videos, and key words and exam tips picked out as you go.

Straight after each one there's a quiz. You also get Lemonaire, our TV-style quiz show, and Last Stand, a 3D zombie defence game where right answers earn the scrap you build with. Get a question wrong and you see the right answer and why. Flash cards with Smart Review bring each card back just before you'd forget it, and the trickiest topics have their own 3D games.

Quiz scores and finished lessons are saved, so a parent can see at a glance what's gone in and where to improve. If you're stuck, our AI assistant explains things again in a different way, any time of day. It's self-study, so there's no live teacher, but you don't need to know the topic yourself to help your child.

Want to see the style first? Many of our 3D games are free to play on our free resources page, and how it works shows each part of a lesson.

Pick your GCSE or IGCSE and start today, with a timetable that runs right up to exam day.

Online GCSE FAQs

Can you take GCSE exams online?

No. GCSE and IGCSE exams are written papers sat at an exam centre. You can do all the learning, practice and mock tests online, then sit the real exam in person.

Is there a minimum age for taking GCSEs?

There's no minimum age for private candidates. Most sit them at 15 or 16, but some home educated teenagers take one or two early to spread the load.

How many GCSEs should a home educated teenager take?

Many sixth forms ask for five GCSEs or IGCSEs at grade 4 or above, often including English and maths. Check the entry requirements of the sixth forms or colleges you're aiming for, then plan backwards. Taking fewer and doing them well beats rushing lots.

Do I need English and maths?

In England, if you're 16 to 18 and don't yet have grade 4 in English and maths, you'll keep studying them at sixth form or college. Most university courses and many careers ask for them too, so they open the most opportunities.

Are online GCSEs recognised?

Yes. The qualification comes from the exam board, not the course provider, and your certificate looks exactly like a school pupil's. GCSEs in England are regulated by Ofqual. A good grade leads to the same further education and career opportunities, however you studied.

Does an online GCSE course include the exam?

No online course can enter you for the exam itself. You book it with a centre and pay them directly. We explain how in the private candidate steps above.
