Diamond is the hardest natural substance. Graphite rubs off on paper. Both are made of only carbon atoms. Fire carbon atoms onto open bonds to build both giant covalent structures yourself, then try to break them: drill your diamond, slide graphite's layers of hexagonal rings, see which one lights the bulb with delocalised electrons, and heat both until the iron next to them melts.
