Night shift at Volta Works. Ions stream through the solution to the electrodes: positive ions to the cathode, negative ions to the anode. Water adds H⁺ and OH⁻ ions too, so at each electrode two kinds of ion compete and only one is discharged. Discharge the winner, let the other go, test the gases and keep the cell running through five solutions and a rush hour.
