When a metal reacts with a non-metal, the electrons in the metal atom's outer shell are transferred to the non-metal atom. Fly the courier drone and carry each electron yourself: the metal atoms become positive ions, the non-metal atoms become negative ions, and the opposite charges snap together. Every compound ends as a dot and cross diagram, then you work out charges from the group number and sort ionic, covalent and metallic bonding.
