MICE Tycoon: business tourism and the MICE sector

This free game is part of our Cambridge iGCSE Travel & Tourism (0471) course for exams in EXAM YEARS 2027-2029.

What does MICE stand for?

MICE is the part of business tourism that covers Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions. You need to know each one for the Cambridge IGCSE Travel and Tourism (0471) course:

  • Meetings: small groups, often 10 to 50 people, discussing a specific topic for a few hours or a couple of days, such as a board meeting or a client meeting.
  • Incentives: trips or events that reward staff for good performance, such as a luxury cruise or VIP Grand Prix tickets for the top sales team.
  • Conferences: large gatherings that share knowledge through talks, workshops and networking. They range from 50 to thousands of delegates.
  • Exhibitions: companies showcase products on stands. Trade shows such as World Travel Market sell to other businesses, while consumer shows such as Comic Con are open to the public.

In Act 1 of the game, the Booking Desk, you read real-style event enquiries against the clock and send each one to the right hall in a 3D convention centre.

What business travellers need

Business travellers want different things from holidaymakers. Their company usually pays, so they expect quality and they spend up to three times more than leisure tourists. Their five main needs are:

  • Efficiency: quick check-in and fast transport, because time is money.
  • Productivity: workspaces, meeting rooms and business centres.
  • Reliability: punctual services and the same standards in every hotel.
  • Comfort: quiet, quality rooms and good food after a long working day.
  • Connectivity: fast, reliable WiFi and charging points.

Technology helps meet these needs: online booking, mobile check-in, AI travel assistants and hybrid meeting studios. In Act 2, the Business Hotel, you name each guest's main need, then build the upgrade that fixes it. Watch out for trends too, such as wellness, sustainability, personalisation and bleisure (business plus leisure).

Why cities compete for MICE events

Destinations such as Singapore and London invest heavily to win big business events. Organisers look for a world-class convention centre, direct flights, quality hotels near the venue, fast public transport, safety and security, and government support from a convention bureau. Singapore ranked 2nd in the world for international association meetings in 2023.

The benefits for the destination include:

  • High spending that spreads to hotels, restaurants, taxis, shops and their local suppliers, creating jobs.
  • Off-peak demand, because many events take place in leisure tourism's quiet season, which reduces seasonality.
  • Knowledge transfer when experts from many countries share ideas.
  • Destination marketing, as delegates who stay on for bleisure recommend the city to others.

The sector also faces challenges: virtual alternatives, cost control and environmental concerns. Hybrid events, mixing in-person and online attendance, are one response. In Act 3, the Big Bid, you spend a ยฃ100m budget to beat a rival city, then answer questions through congress week as delegate spending climbs. The case study of ExCeL London, with its own DLR stations and London City Airport next door, appears at the end.

Exam tips

  • Learn what each letter of MICE means and have one example of each ready.
  • When you explain why a destination wants business tourists, give the benefit and then explain it, for example higher spending brings more income to local businesses and creates jobs.
  • Link a facility to a need: mobile check-in meets the need for efficiency, a business centre meets the need for productivity.
  • For a 4-mark "explain two reasons" question, make two clear points and develop each one with a "this means that" sentence.
